Last Call: Machine Birds

Machine Birds

I’ve been depressed recently.  I blame the weather and the work.  Summer is truly came to a close, or so it felt this week.  Mist enveloped the Northeast and I was busy with school non-stop.  Accordingly I bring you some less than happy music this week.  Don’t fret I’m not (too) depressed or anything.  Sometimes you just need to embrace that sadness and let beauty squeeze out.

PLAY “If I”

The Norwegian (I swear I don’t look for Scandinavians, they just find me) indie electro-pop duo Bird Machines is comprised of two friends, Maria Skranes and Marte Eberson.  Together they create delightfully melancholy and atmospheric electronic music that tugs at your emotions.  Fueled by slow progressing synthesizers and delightfully delicate female vocals “If I” progresses into an enchanting ballad of lost love.

I may have said before that I’m a massive fan of electronic music that seems to just come easy or naturally.  Machine Birds’ organic flow and ebb of electro loops and synths creates a dreamlike feel that calms and relaxes.  Perfect given my current level of stress.  Until I hear those haunting lyrics.  Then I’m just sad again.  Woe is me, right?

Despite following a pop lyrical format of verses joinded by a repeating chorus Machine Birds does not keep the light hearted nature of your traditional pop song.  Instead they sing of a lost love who chose someone else despite the openness of her heart.  God that’s depressing.  I don’t even think my busy schedule or never ending rain can compete.  Nope it definitely can’t.

Love is tough enough as is (or so I’ve heard), there’s many a song, poem, novel and movie about it which clearly means there are some people out there who have certainly struggled with it.  I’d imagine, you know if I had a heart and all, that unrequited love is probably the worst love of them all.  No one likes to be told they can’t have what they want and even worse who likes to be told your not what another person wants?

Well now that I’ve thoroughly bummed myself out I’m going to go off and chill out to this track some more.  Be warned Machine Birds beauty does not end witht his track.  They just released a new EP which you can find more about on their facebook page. Which I can assure you is not all sadness.  However if you’re like me and just need to let out a good cry I got you covered.
