Keep Your Eye on Town Hall

PLAY “Swim Team”

Well, Jacob is out this week. So I spent a couple hours looking for the kind of band that Jacob might like—which I’m not quite sure I ended up doing successfully. But hey, I’m my own worst critic: so whatever’s good. Let’s talk about an indie folk band called Town Hall.

The first reason I picked Town Hall is that they’re from NYU—the same school Jacob goes to. But more importantly, they also kick a pretty solid amount of ass. Ok basically, if you don’t start smiling half way through this song—you don’t have a heart. “Swim Team” off of the band’s first album, Roots & Bells (released on April 15th, earlier this year) is a fantastic song. It’s relatively up front with its story: a young boy dreams of being a swimmer, but lives in an environment where he can’t; and then he runs away to swim. It’s heart breaking in the best way—grab a few tissues.

Musically, the song keeps you interested with whimsical riffing on guitar, soft harmonies, a pensive breakdown and recapitulation, and all sorts of auxiliary instrument flares.

These guys are definitely going to be one to keep your eye on. Considering the success they’ve had with their first album, you can be sure they’re going to get big. If you like “Swim Team,” be sure to check out/ pick up the rest of their album, Roots & Bells at their bandcamp. It only costs ten American dollars—they’ll be the best ten American dollars you spend all day. Check it out guys! Support a fresh, new band!
